Lifestyle Design: Build a Life You Don't Need to Escape
If you live for the vacation countdown, something's off. Here's how lifestyle design can help you build everyday margin, meaning, and alignment after 40.

You Shouldn't Need a Vacation to Feel Alive
Twenty minutes that are yours — no phone, no obligations — can change how you feel about your life.
Let me ask you something. How often do you count down to your next vacation, treating it as your only real escape from reality?
I've been there. I remember the hotel stays, the cruises, the Sandals resorts with my wife, Disney World with the kids — those trips were incredible. Some of the best memories of my life happened on those vacations. But somewhere along the way, I noticed something that bothered me. I funneled all my energy into those two weeks, then spent the remaining fifty just grinding to survive. That isn't a life; it is a survival plan disguised as a career.
Here's the truth: if your everyday life feels like something you need to escape from, the problem isn't your vacation schedule. The problem is your lifestyle design. And the good news? You can do something about it. You are not too old. You have not missed your chance.
When your everyday life feels like something you don't need to escape from, you've found lifestyle design.
Lifestyle Design Means Building Margin on Purpose
The life you want isn't waiting on the other side of retirement. It's something you build now.
Lifestyle design isn't about quitting your job and moving to a beach. It's about intention. It's about looking at your calendar, your energy, your relationships, and your goals — and asking a hard question: Does this daily life actually fit who I want to be?
I learned this the hard way. Growing up, I worked in the family business from the time I was five or six years old. Every evening, I was dragging trash cans as big as I was through that dental office. The hygienists still remember it. I hated giving up my afternoons when other kids were outside playing sports — and I lived for sports. But that grind built something in me. It taught me discipline, sacrifice, and what it means to show up even when you'd rather be anywhere else.
But here's what I also learned: there's a difference between working hard because you're building something meaningful and working hard because you haven't designed any margin into your life. For years, I was running at full speed, managing everyone else's needs, and wondering why I felt empty by Wednesday. If that sounds familiar, here's how to create more margin in life when it always feels full.
Lifestyle design for professionals means creating space — not just in your schedule, but in your mind. It means building a Tuesday that doesn't make you desperate for Friday. It means having enough energy left at 7 PM to actually be present with your family instead of collapsing in front of a screen.
I think about the times we'd travel as a family — Hawaii, the Caribbean, San Diego — and the best part was always unplugging. No phone buzzing, no email nagging, no meetings. Just us. But why did I need to fly four thousand miles to feel that way? The answer is I hadn't built that kind of presence into my regular life. I was saving all my "being alive" for vacation.
That had to change. Change happened—not overnight, but through small, intentional decisions.
Having enough energy left at 7 PM to be truly present — that's what margin looks like.
Action Steps: Start Designing Your Life This Week
Forget overhauling your entire life overnight. That is a recipe for failure. Start with these five deliberate shifts:
- Audit your energy for one week. Write down what drains you and what fires you up. You can't design a better life if you don't know what's stealing the one you have. I did this exercise a few years back and was shocked at how much time I was giving to things that gave me nothing in return.
- Build one margin block into every day. It doesn't have to be a full hour. Even twenty minutes that are yours — no phone, no obligations — can change how you feel about your life. Go for a walk. Sit on the porch. Read something that isn't work-related. Guard that time like it's money, because it is.
- Have the hard conversation about alignment. If your work or relationships clash with the life you claim to want, acknowledge it. Do this not to complain, but to start fixing the problem. I've had those conversations. They're uncomfortable. But staying misaligned is worse.
- Reconnect with what gives you energy now. Not the 25-year-old you. The current you. What gets you out of bed excited on a Saturday morning? That's a clue to your design. For me, it's family time, travel planning, learning new technology, and helping people see that their next chapter can still be strong.
- Stop waiting for permission. Nobody is going to hand you a well-designed life. You have to build it. Busy does not mean stuck. You can still create momentum — but only if you stop waiting for the "right time" that never comes.
What This Looks Like at NCURAG
I built NCURAG because I believe personal growth has no expiration date. I've lived enough seasons to know that life comes in phases — some exhilarating, some exhausting, and some that just require you to put your head down and grind. But every season is an opportunity to design something better. If you're not sure which season you're in right now, that's a great place to start.
After my kidney transplant in 2019, that belief got even stronger. When you get a second chance at health, you stop taking "someday" for an answer. You start asking why you're saving all your best energy for a future that isn't guaranteed. That experience reinforced something I already suspected: the life you want isn't waiting on the other side of retirement. It's something you build now, in the middle of everything else.
At NCURAG, we talk about lifestyle design the way we talk about travel experiences — with intention, with excitement, and with real practicality. Whether it's planning a family trip that creates lifelong memories, or designing a Tuesday that actually feels like yours, the principle is the same. Make the memories while you still can. Don't just exist through this season.
Ready to Build Something Worth Staying In?
You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to start making decisions that line up with the life you actually want. One margin block. One hard conversation. One intentional choice at a time.
If this resonated with you, you're in the right place. NCURAG is a community for people who refuse to believe their best years are behind them. We share practical ideas, real stories, and encouragement that leads to action — not just feel-good words.
