The Myth of Solo Greatness: Why Even the Best Need a Team

Even the 'best of the best' don't go solo. Discover how professionals 40+ build championship teams, leverage strengths, and achieve true greatness. Stop the solo climb!

The Myth of Solo Greatness: Why Even the Best Need a Team

Have you ever felt like you're juggling too many responsibilities—career, family, health, hobbies—and something just feels off? You’re not alone. Many ambitious professionals and leaders carry a heavy belief: to be truly great and the “best of the best,” we must do it all, master it all, and never show weakness by needing help.

My Perspective: The Solo Mountain Climb That Ended in a Plateau

I remember feeling the pressure to be the one with all the answers—the go-to man who could tackle every initiative, resolve every issue, and find every solution solo. I’d read about the legends—the lone wolves who conquered mountains—and thought that was the path to true success. So, I pushed, I learned, and I worked harder than anyone else. For a while, it worked. I achieved a lot, saw some incredible wins, and felt that surge of pride that comes from personal accomplishment.

Then came the wake-up call—I hit a wall. The challenges grew more demanding, and I found myself stretched too thin, exhausted, and honestly feeling a bit resentful. I was doing everything, but I wasn’t doing anything exceptionally.

I realized I was limiting my own growth, and more importantly, the growth of those around me, because I was trying to be the entire team instead of the best version of myself within a team. That experience taught me a vital lesson: my limits weren't set by individual effort but by my readiness to collaborate and contribute to a strong team.

The Main Lesson: Real Greatness is a Team Sport

I can tell you from experience: thinking we have to do it all alone isn’t just exhausting; it’s a recipe for burnout. In every arena where the 'best of the best' excel, one truth stands out: they never go it alone. They are surrounded by specialists, coaches, mentors, and teammates who fill their gaps and elevate their game.

Michael Jordan: Beyond the Highlight Reel

Think about Michael Jordan. When you picture MJ, you see the gravity-defying dunks, the clutch shots, the relentless drive. He was, without a doubt, one of the greatest individual talents to ever touch a basketball. But did he win six championships by himself? Absolutely not. Jordan himself famously said, "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships."

He needed Scottie Pippen, the versatile defender and secondary playmaker who was the perfect complement. He needed Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman, tenacious rebounders and defenders who did the gritty work, along with Steve Kerr to hit crucial three-pointers.

Crucially, he also needed Phil Jackson, the Zen Master coach who understood team dynamics and managed those big personalities. Without that ecosystem of support, even MJ, with all his talent, wouldn't have reached the pinnacle.

Kobe Bryant: The Mamba Mentality and His Circle

The same goes for Kobe Bryant. The "Mamba Mentality" often evokes an image of relentless, singular dedication. And Kobe was that. Yet, his early championships came alongside Shaquille O'Neal, an unstoppable force in the paint.

Later, after a period where he tried to carry the team almost single-handedly, he won two more rings with Pau Gasol, a skilled big man who provided the perfect counterbalance to Kobe's scoring prowess. Phil Jackson was again at the helm, guiding and challenging him.

These legends didn’t lose their greatness by seeking help; they enhanced it. They understood their unique strengths and actively sought out others whose strengths compensated for their weaknesses. They knew their role, and they built their championship teams.

God's Design and AI's Specialization

And here’s the thing: this idea goes beyond just sports. It’s part of our very design as human beings. The Bible tells us that each of us is "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14), endowed with unique gifts and purposes. None of us is designed to be a jack-of-all-trades, in every single aspect of life. We are meant to complement each other, forming a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

You can see this principle in action even in technology. Take a moment to think about advanced AI systems, like Large Language Models. They excel at specific tasks—like generating text and answering questions—but they certainly have their limitations. They can "hallucinate" incorrect information, struggle with context outside their training data, and lack true reasoning or long-term memory.

These are specialized tools, designed to excel in particular domains. They require human input, guidance, and expertise to be truly effective. They are part of a larger system—a team, if you will—not a replacement for it.

Becoming the best version of yourself isn’t about mastering everything. It’s about recognizing your unique strengths and sharpening them while intentionally surrounding yourself with people, resources, and tools that excel in areas where you don't. That’s the real way to shatter ceilings and reach your personal best.

Action Steps: Building Your Championship Team

  1. Identify Your 2-3 Unique Strengths: What do you excel at? What feels easy for you? Where do you contribute the most? Be honest and specific. This isn’t about what you think you should excel at, but what you actually do.

  2. Pinpoint One Critical Gap: Where do you consistently feel drained, inefficient, or out of your depth? What’s an area that holds you back or prevents you from fully leveraging your strengths? This isn't a weakness to fix yourself, but a gap to fill with external support.

  3. Find Your "Pippen" or "Jackson": Once you pinpoint that gap, think about who or what can help you fill it. This might be a mentor, a virtual assistant, a specialized software, a financial advisor, or even a supportive community of like-minded folks.

  4. Delegate or Collaborate Deliberately: Once you've identified your team member or tool, actively delegate, collaborate, or integrate their support. Let go of the need for control in that area and trust their expertise. This frees you up to focus on your strengths.
